TLDR

Missed the Black Friday onboarding deadline? The phone rings again. December spending peaks in the week before Christmas, and the end-of-January payday brings a restock wave with more transactions than mid-December. Plan three windows: gifting (1 to 15 Dec), last-minute (16 to 24 Dec) and January restock. Book a call and we will map your festive plan.

The phone rings again

Onboarding for Black Friday closed on 6 November. If you missed it, you are not out of the game. Black Friday is the biggest weekend, but it is not the only one. Among Capitec’s clients, the pre-Christmas weekend in 2024 saw R23 billion in spend, and the end-of-January payday weekend R21 billion. That is a lot of shoppers to talk to. And while your competitors pull back after Black Friday, you can step in.

What December and January really look like

December is about gifts and gatherings. Absa reported card spending rose 10% month on month in December 2025, and online spend grew 17% year on year. Standard Bank said spending usually ramps up in the week before Christmas, on groceries, clothing, food and travel.

January is about restocking. Capitec found January payday transaction volumes were 6.7% higher than the mid-December peak, even though the total value was lower. More, smaller purchases. People replacing basics and getting ready for school.

Shoppers are careful in both. The same Absa data showed average transaction sizes slipping in November. Value still wins.

Your three-window festive plan

Window Shopper mood Your TikTok move
1 to 15 Dec: Gifting Browsing, comparing, saving up Gift guides, “under R500” edits, creator unboxings
16 to 24 Dec: Last minute Rushed, needs it now Delivery cut-off reminders, click-and-collect, quick demos
End of January: Restock Careful, value-first Bundles, multipacks, back-to-school, “stretch your rand” content

Each window needs its own hooks. A gift guide that works on 5 December will not sell on 22 December, when the shopper’s only question is whether it arrives in time.

Five moves that work this season

  1. Recycle your best Black Friday creative. If you ran anything in November, your winning hooks already have data. Remix them with a festive angle.
  2. Lead with delivery dates. In the last-minute window, “arrives before the 24th” can beat any discount.
  3. Build gift bundles. Bundles beat a straight discount on Black Friday, and they work even better as gifts. See the worked rand example.
  4. Use creators for gift ideas. People trust a creator’s gift list more than an ad. Here is how to choose the right creators.
  5. Plan January now. Most brands go quiet in January, so there is less noise to cut through while shoppers are still spending on essentials.

Why start in November

The festive season moves fast. Creators book up, delivery cut-offs arrive and the auction fills with brands again. Starting in November gives you time to test hooks in early December and scale the winners before Christmas. The same test, optimise and scale method from our Black Friday Game Plan applies here.
