TLDR

Sign 1: you have not tested a single hook. Fix: launch three to five angles this week.
Sign 2: your creators are not booked. Fix: shortlist and confirm in writing now.
Sign 3: you have no TikTok LIVE plan. Fix: hosts, run-of-show, offers and moderation.
Sign 4: your offer is just a discount. Fix: bundle it, upgrade it or add to it.
Sign 5: your checkout breaks on mobile. Fix: test it on a mid-range phone on mobile data.
Score two or more? You are behind but recoverable. Onboarding closes on 6 November.

Five missed calls from Black Friday. How many are yours?

Black Friday is on Friday 27 November. If you are reading this in October, that is less than seven weeks away, which is both plenty of time and not much at all. The good news: being behind is fixable if you spot it now.

Read each sign, be honest, and keep count.

Sign 1: You haven’t tested a single hook yet

On TikTok, the first two seconds decide whether anyone sees the rest. Go into Black Friday with untested hooks and you are guessing in the most expensive auction of the year, where every wasted impression costs more than it did in October.

The fix: start this week. Take one hero product, launch three to five versions where only the opening changes, and let real audiences pick your winner. Judge on hold rate, clicks and cost per result. The full hook-testing method is here.

Sign 2: Your creators aren’t booked

The creators who suit your brand are being approached by everyone else too. Leave it late and you get whoever is free, not whoever is best, and on a platform where nine out of ten South African shoppers act on Q4 content, the creator is often the whole campaign.

The fix: shortlist a few creators who fit your audience, brief them with a clear objective and deadline, and confirm dates, deliverables and usage rights in writing. Ask for a few variations each, so you have fresh material when your first ads tire.

Sign 3: You have no TikTok LIVE plan

A LIVE with no plan is a rambling stream with no reason to stay or buy. A LIVE with one is a show: shoppers ask questions, see the product in real time and jump on timed offers.

The fix: plan your hosts, your running order, your offer drops and your moderation, then rehearse once. And because TikTok Shop is not yet live in South Africa, keep a short URL and offer code on screen so viewers know where to buy. Steal our 60-minute run-of-show.

Sign 4: Your offer is just a discount

Every brand is shouting a percentage. A discount on its own is easy to copy, easy to scroll past and hard on your margin, and South African shoppers are buying more carefully than the headlines suggest.

The fix: bundle it, upgrade it or add to it, and check the maths first. A two-product bundle can give shoppers a bigger saving in rands and still need less from every ad to break even. See the worked rand example.

Sign 5: Your checkout breaks on mobile

This is the silent one. You can do everything else right, send thousands of people to your store and lose them on the last screen.

The scale of it is sobering. Baymard Institute puts the average online cart abandonment rate at 70.22%, and among shoppers who abandon for reasons other than “just browsing”, 40% leave because extra costs like delivery and fees were too high, and 17% because checkout was too long or complicated. It matters more every year, because online spending has overtaken in-store on at least one major South African payments platform, and every TikTok shopper arrives on a phone.

The fix: test it the way your customers will use it. Not the flagship on the office wifi, but a mid-range Android on mobile data, which is closer to what many shoppers carry. Affordable handsets are bringing more South Africans into mobile shopping every year.

Run this ten-minute test:

  1. Tap your own TikTok ad or bio link on a mid-range phone, with wifi off.
  2. Time how long the product page takes to load.
  3. Check that the price on the page matches the offer in the video.
  4. Add to cart and see whether delivery costs show before checkout.
  5. Try to check out as a guest, without creating an account.
  6. Count the steps to payment. Every one you can cut, cut.
  7. Check that autofill works for address and card details.
  8. Try your Black Friday code and make sure it applies.
  9. Pay with at least two methods your customers actually use.
  10. Confirm the order email arrives and looks right on a phone.

How many of these are true for you?

Your score What it means
0 to 1 You are in good shape. Keep testing and get ready to scale.
2 to 3 Behind but recoverable. Start with hooks, creators and checkout this week.
4 to 5 Start today. It is tight, but a focused plan can still get you to 27 November with something solid.

FAQ

Check five things: hooks tested, creators booked, a TikTok LIVE plan, an offer that is more than a discount, and a checkout that works on mobile. If two or more are missing, you are behind but recoverable.
Not yet, but time is tight. Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026, and GrowthCharter onboarding closes on 6 November. A focused plan can still get you there if you start with hooks, creators and checkout this week.
Use a mid-range phone on mobile data and walk the whole journey from the TikTok link to payment confirmation. Baymard research puts mobile cart abandonment as high as 80%, and an older Google study found 53% of mobile visitors leave if a page takes over three seconds to load.
South African shoppers chase value, not just markdowns. Bundle products, upgrade the customer to a better version for a small top-up, or add a free extra, and check the offer against your break-even ROAS.
Three to five. Change only the opening so you can see what made the difference, and let real audiences pick your winners based on hold rate, clicks and cost per result.
